Super Cell AI Engineering Teams

At the moment, the teams most likely to pull ahead in the AI-enabled world of software development, are not necessarily the largest, the most heavily funded, or the most procedurally optimized.
They are small, empowered, technically mature teams using AI as a force multiplier, building meaningful systems in a fraction of the time it once required. We've started to think of these as Super Cell engineering teams.
Not because they are flashy. Not because they are autonomous. But because they combine depth of engineering experience with disciplined, intelligent use of AI. And that combination changes the economics of software development.
From Early GPT to Agentic Engineering
At Infonomic, we've been following the LLM-based AI story closely — from the first release of GPT through to the agentic coding tools we now use in our daily practice.
Over a relatively short period of time, we've watched the tooling evolve:
- From novelty interfaces to serious development assistants
- From autocomplete to architectural co-pilot
- From isolated prompts to agents capable of reasoning across an entire codebase
In our own work, AI-assisted coding has become a multiplier.
We're able to:
- Prototype faster
- Refactor more confidently
- Generate tests more efficiently
- Explore architectural alternatives quickly
- Deliver production systems sooner
This is not just an incremental improvement. It meaningfully alters iteration cycles. And in engineering, shortened iteration cycles compound.
The Human in the Loop — and Why It Matters
Much of the current discussion around AI development centers on the idea of the “human in the loop.” We think that framing is correct — at least for now.
It works because the human supervising the system possesses deep domain expertise. The supervision is effective because the human understands:
- Systems architecture
- Security boundaries
- Data modeling
- Infrastructure tradeoffs
- Deployment risk
- Failure modes
Perhaps even more importantly - humans understand intent and alignment. In other words, the "human in the loop" knows not only how to build software without AI - but whether the system being considered should be built at all.
And so AI supervision is not the same as passive approval. It requires judgment. It requires experience. It requires the ability to recognize when something is subtly wrong even if it appears to function. And it requires a contextual awareness that only experienced 'humans' can bring to the table.
A Second Model: Hands Off the Wheel
Unless of course the following becomes true. A user simply states:
“Make me a system that does X.”
A collection of AI agents — some generating code, others reviewing it, testing it, or deploying it — collaborate to produce a working system. If the user is satisfied with the result, the loop closes.
There are users attempting this with existing services. And so the real question is not whether it will be attempted, but how far it can reliably go. To what extent can complex systems truly be generated, validated, and deployed without deep human architectural oversight?
We don't yet have a definitive answer - yet.
AI tools are increasingly enabling end users — not just professional engineers — to attempt to build their own systems. Some succeed. And some build surprisingly capable prototypes. At the moment, many hit a wall. That wall often appears in the form of:
- Edge cases and unexpected complexity
- Performance constraints
- Security vulnerabilities
- Data consistency problems
- Integration challenges
- Maintenance debt
At this point, the narrative changes. The user no longer needs a traditional vendor relationship. But they may need something else: a highly capable, compact team that can audit, stabilize, secure, and extend what has already been built.
In other words, they may need their own Super Cell.
It may be that a significant portion of smaller, less complex systems can be built this way — perhaps even half. Or perhaps much less. Or more. But this is one to watch carefully.
Why the Super Cell Matters Now
For the moment, the most powerful configuration is neither fully autonomous AI nor traditional large engineering departments. It is the small, experienced team that understands how to supervise and collaborate with AI systems effectively.
A Super Cell :
- Understands intent and alignment
- Has deep engineering maturity
- Understands the full lifecycle of software systems
- Uses AI agents aggressively but critically
- Ships quickly without sacrificing structural integrity
These teams do not need forty engineers. They may need four.
Four engineers, equipped with modern AI tooling and deep architectural experience, can now move at a speed that was previously unattainable for teams of that size.
This shift has broader implications. Large SaaS incumbents, especially those dependent on incremental feature expansion or organizational scale, may struggle to adapt if their structures cannot move at comparable speed. When the cost of building and iterating drops dramatically, competitive moats shift.
Wall Street’s concerns about defensibility in certain categories are not irrational. When capable teams can “roll their own” solutions, the balance of power shifts.
The Open Question
The logical question is if, or when we reach a stage where we ask AI for “X,” and “X” simply works — reliably, securely, and at scale — without architectural supervision. If that threshold is crossed, the structure of the software industry will change again, and more fundamentally.
But we're not there yet. For now, leverage belongs to those who understand both sides:
- The architecture of complex systems within a broad context
- And the strengths and limits of AI agents
Until the day when we can ask for “X” and it simply works, the advantage belongs to those who know how to build — and who know how to supervise the builders we've just created.
